Talk about art imitating life! In the season 3 premiere of the BBC hit series “Sherlock,” Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the title character, was joined by some pretty cool guest-stars: his parents!
That’s right, Cumberbatch’s real parents played Sherlock Holmes’ parents in “The Empty Hearse” which pulled in a record 9.2 million viewers for the program.
The “Star Trek” actor admitted that working with his kin proved to be “kind of nerve-wracking” though he “was so proud of them” for jumping in head first.
Both professional actors, Cumberbatch’s parents Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham were both “brilliant” and “fantastic” according to their son, even though the subject matter of the episode was pretty dark.
Last season saw Sherlock fake his own death and this episode explored the ways that the famous detective could have pulled it off.

Ventham, who is best known for her role as Colonel Virginia Lake on the 1970’s TV series “UFO,” also guest-starred on “Doctor Who” back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Cumberbatch's father Carlton recently guest-starred on the hit British drama “Downton Abbey” and has appeared on a number of other programs including the TV movie “The Scarlet Pimpernel.”
