Reed's literary agent Andrew Wylie believes that his death on Sunday is related to a liver transplant that the singer underwent earlier this year, though the official cause of death has not been confirmed.
The rocker served as guitarist and principal songwriter for The Velvet Underground until he left the group in 1970. He then went on to have a long solo career, releasing 20 albums over 35 years. Rolling Stone magazine called the late vocalist “a rock pioneer” and “restlessly inventive.”
