The world collectively gets excited every time a celebrity reveals they are pregnant and will be giving birth to a new baby — but happily ever after doesn’t always happen. That’s because sometimes our favorite stars suffer a miscarriage and lose the precious life they were expecting. It’s a tragic thing, but it’s a reality that some have bravely open up about.
It may seem like a new thing with Hilaria Baldwin and James Van Der Beek recently experiencing miscarriages in their respective families, but it’s not. Beyoncé
After being passed over for praise on projects like “Single Ladies,” Lemonade and Homecoming, fans have been wondering what the heck is up with the people who give out awards in regards to Beyoncé. One fan even got the chance to ask Queen Bey about it in an “ask me anything”-style interview with Elle.
“I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift. Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else,” she began when asked if not snatching trophies ever left her “disappointed.”
“Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backwards,” Beyoncé continued. Being “number one” was no longer my priority. “My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling.”
Wise words.

James Van Der Beek
It doesn’t get any braver than revealing a pregnancy on TV — especially after suffering multiple miscarriages. That’s exactly what James and wife Kimberly Van Der Beek did on the October 7 episode of Dancing With the Stars season 28 when they told the world they would be welcoming baby No. 6 into their brood.
“We’ve had five kids. We’ve had three miscarriages in between those,” James, 42, said — noting later on Instagram that they were going to show the ultrasound on the show whether there was a heartbeat or not. “Miscarriage is something people really don’t talk about and we want to recognize that it happens to people. We wanted to destigmatize that as much as we possibly could.”
Sadly, things didn’t work out for the pair’s plans to expand their family. On the November 18 episode of DWTS, James revealed the news that Kimberly, 37, had suffered another miscarriage.
“My wife Kimberly went through every expectant parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby,” the Dawson’s Creek hunk said on the show before taking to Instagram to provide more context. “The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond. You never know why these things happen. That’s what I’ve been telling my kids.”

Hilaria Baldwin
After suffering a miscarriage in April 2019, Hilaria and Alec Baldwin revealed they were once again pregnant and expecting baby No. 5 in September 2019. Sadly, just two months later, the couple revealed they had experienced another tragic loss with yet another miscarriage. As to be expected, the yoga expert was feeling down in the wake of it but, thanks to her family, she told fans “I’m doing better” a week later.
Given her past miscarriage, Hilaria will likely look at this as something she can learn and grow from.
“Many people think being soft is being weak, but I’ve found true power in being vulnerable,” the 35-year-old revealed after announcing the new pregnancy and looking back at losing the one prior. “When I decided to open up about my miscarriage I experienced this past spring, I was nervous to talk about it … but these hidden experiences in my life are only scary when I feel I cannot be open.”

Pink
It not have been recent, but Pink opened up in April 2019 about how she suffered “several” miscarriages since she was 17 in one of her most relatable songs yet, “Happy” off her Hurts 2B Human album. The song’s lyrics, for the record, read: “Since I was 17, I’ve always hated my body / And it feels like my body’s hated me.”
“I think it’s important to talk about what you’re ashamed of, who you really are and the painful [expleteive],” the 40-year-old singer told USA Today about getting personal in the tune. “I’ve always written that way.”

Meghan McCain
In July 2019, Meghan McCain opened up about the fact that she had suffered a miscarriage, calling it a “horrendous experience” and one she “would not wish … upon anyone.”
“We feel sorrow and we weep because our babies were real,” The View cohost explained. “They were conceived, and they lived, fully human and fully ours — and then they died. We deserve the opportunity to speak openly of them, to share what they were and to mourn.”
As for why she decided to get candid about it, the 35-year-old explained in an October 30 interview with Good Morning America that it was to do her part to normalize the experience so many women go through.
“Nobody talks about this kind of stuff,” Meghan noted. “The only experience I’ve ever had on TV when women are pregnant is streamers and excitement, which is wonderful and amazing, but I just think there’s a lot of other women out there who have my experience and you are not alone.”

Dylan Dreyer
Just months after she suffered a miscarriage — which led to secondary infertility — Today meteorologist Dylan Dreyer revealed that baby No. 2 was in her forecast.
The 38-year-old — who is already mom to son Calvin — recalled how husband Brian Fichera had helped her get through the terrible time. “You didn’t lose the baby,” she quoted him as having said. “It’s your body doing what it needs to do. YOU didn’t do anything wrong.”
His words are powerful and likely what many women need to hear when this happens to them.

Alanis Morissette
“Between [my two kids Ever and Onyx] there were some false starts. I always wanted to have three kids, and then I’ve had some challenges and some miscarriages so I just didn’t think it was possible,” the Canadian-American singer revealed to SELF‘s digital issue. The Grammy winner added how she felt “so much grief and fear” while trying to have another baby.
“I chased and prayed for pregnancy and learned so much about my body and biochemistry and immunity and gynecology through the process. It was a torturous learning and loss-filled and persevering process,” she added.
Alanis shares her daughters with her husband, Mario “Souleye” Treadway, and they are expecting a third baby.

Carrie Underwood
Before having her second child, the country star revealed to CBS Sunday Morning that she had suffered three miscarriages. “2017 just wasn’t how I imagined it. I kind of planned that 2017 was going to be the year that I work on new music, and I’d have a baby,” the 36-year-old said, trying to hold back tears.
She continued, “We got pregnant early 2017 and it didn’t work out … Got pregnant again in early 2018, didn’t work out. So at that point, it was kinda like okay, what’s the deal?”
Carrie has been quite open about her experiences numerous times. She once admitted to The Guardian how tough it was to continue while the weight of her miscarriages pushed her down. “I was still trying to do my job and put on a smiley happy face and be Carrie Underwood. And then I’d go home and fall apart,” she said.

Beverley Mitchell
Late last year, the 7th Heaven alum took to her blog to reveal she suffered a miscarriage while she and her husband, Michael Cameron, were expecting twins. “Our new dream of our growing family came crashing down; we had a miscarriage,” the 38-year-old said.
She added, “This was a shock. Honestly, my first instinct was to say I was fine, and to be honest; I was trying to be. I thought I had to be, for my family, for myself. I had to jump on a plane and go to work being surrounded by babies and kids while I was still miscarrying. That was interesting.”
The actress has two kids, daughter Kenzie, 6, and son Hutton, 4.

Michelle Obama
The former First Lady once shared that about 20 years ago she had a miscarriage. “I felt like I failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were because we don’t talk about them,” the 54-year-old told Robin Roberts. “We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken.”
She continued, “That’s one of the reasons why I think it’s important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen.”
Michelle is now a mom to two daughters, Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17, with her husband, Barack Obama.

Gabrielle Union
“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” the actress wrote in an excerpt obtained by People. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”
The 46-year-old eventually used a surrogate to have her only child — son Kaavia, 5-months — with her husband, basketball player, Dwayne Wade. Gabrielle is also helping raise Dwayne’s three sons — 17-year-old Zaire, 11-year-old Zion, and 5-year-old Xavier — from previous relationships.

The Big Bang Theory actress was once very honest about her miscarriage, saying that it was “one of the most profound sorrows” she’s ever endured. “It kickstarted a primal depression that lingered in me,” she said.
She continued, “The image of our baby on the ultrasound monitor — without movement, without a heartbeat — after we had seen that same little heart healthy and flickering just two weeks prior completely blindsided us and haunts me to this day. I kept waiting for the sadness to lift … but it didn’t,” she recalled.
Melissa gave birth to daughter Sadie in 2017, with her husband, writer Winston Beigel.
