Angelina Jolie is taking control of her health in a very big way.
In a new op-ed published by 'The New York Times,' the 39-year-old actress revealed she underwent a preventative surgery last week to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes after doctors told her she had a 50 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer.
"I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn't live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren," the mom-of-six wrote.

"The beautiful thing about such moments in life is that there is so much clarity. You know what you live for and what matters. It is polarizing, and it is peaceful," she continued.
After receiving a phone call with her blood test results, the 'Maleficent' star explained she set up an appointment with the same surgeon who treated her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2007.

"'You look just like her.' I broke down," she recalled of meeting the doctor. "But we smiled at each other and agreed we were there to deal with any problem, so 'let's get on with it.'"

"It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer. I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, 'Mom died of ovarian cancer,'" she wrote in the 'The New York Times.'
Angelina — who is mom to Maddox, 13, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, 8, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 6 — similarly underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.
