Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Son Maddox Is All Grown Up: See His Photos Through the Years

Being the first child ever adopted by Angelina Jolie is a cool title that Maddox-Jolie Pitt will always hold because that’s exactly what happened in March of 2002. Fast-forward to today, and we now see how much the oldest of the actress and Brad Pitt‘s six kids has really changed.

Maddox, has had cameras following him ever since the Girl, Interrupted star decided to adopt him when he was just 7 months old from an orphanage in Cambodia. Ever since then, his life has been anything but ordinary. While the Oscar winner was married to Billy Bob Thornton at the time she met Maddox, she adopted her son on her own and raised him as a single parent after splitting from the Bad Santa star in 2003.

In 2006, one year into Angelina’s new relationship with Brad, the Fight Club actor adopted Maddox as well. Together, the pair have five other kids: Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Angelina filed for divorce in 2016, two years after the couple wed. When asked at the age of 18 about if he would ever be able to repair his strained relationship with Brad, Maddox revealed, “Whatever happens, happens.”

Maddox worked closely with his mom when she directed the 2017 film First They Killed My Father, serving as an executive producer on the movie shot entirely on location in his birth country. In his first ever interview, Maddox told People, “I was trying to help wherever I could.” He added, “[She’s] fun, funny, and easy to work with. She’s a wonder.”

“Mad knows himself very well, and if he said he was ready, I knew he knew,” Angelina said about her eldest son “He goes back and forth [to Cambodia] a lot, but this would be over four months of just being in the country, really reading, listening, learning and absorbing all things about his culture and country [including] the very, very dark parts.”

The then-16-year-old said his favorite thing about Cambodia was the “people by far. [They are] calm, relaxed, and when they want to do something wild, they do it — much like me in a way. I’m proud to be a Cambodian.”

Maddox didn’t end up following in his mom’s footsteps into filmmaking when it came to choosing a career path … at least for now. Angelina and her son toured several universities in 2019, including New York University and the University of Chicago, so Mad could pursue a higher education.

Ultimately, Maddox chose prestigious Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, as to where he would go to college. He’s studying biochemistry and lives in an on-campus dormitory. Already fluent in Russian and French languages, Maddox began taking lessons in Korean before his move to the country.
