Now that his nest is almost empty, he’s back on the big screen as reclusive mogul Howard Hughes in Rules Don’t Apply, a 1950s-set rom-com that he also co-wrote and directed. “I have a 16-year-old, a 19-year-old, a 22-year-old and a 24-year-old,” Warren, 79, says of Ella, Isabel, Benjamin and Stephen. “I thought I would enjoy doing this movie because they’re all floating away to become even smarter than I am.”

His wife, Annette, who co-stars in Rules, tells Closer that she couldn’t be happier with his choice. “It’s a dream come true for me that our children have been able to see him at work,” gushes the 58-year-old.

Warren’s costars find him no less admirable. “He’s incredible,” Dick Tracy alum Mandy Patinkin tells Closer. “[Family] is all he’s ever wanted, and he wasn’t about to miss a day of it. He didn’t want to split the focus.”
