When it comes to motherhood, there ain’t no mountain high enough that can keep Diana Ross away from her kids. Though you know the “Endless Love” songstress as one of the most popular icons of all time, Diana plays a more important role when she’s off-stage: mom to her five children.
Diana shares her three older daughters, Tracee Ellis Ross, Rhonda Ross Kendrick and Chudney Ross, with her first husband, Robert Ellis Silberstein. The former couple married in 1971, but six years after walking down the aisle and starting a family together, Diana and Robert called it quits in 1977.
By 1985, however, the “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” artist moved on when she said “I do” to Arne Naess, Jr. The ex-duo expanded Diana’s family with their children, Evan Ross and Ross Naess, but they also split in 2000. Despite the divorces, Diana focused on motherhood, establishing a close bond with each of her kids.
Tracee once gushed about how great of a mother Diana was to her and her four siblings as children. “I felt like I grew up in her embrace, not her shadow,” she told Elle Canada in July 2018. “And that is a testament to her. [Her children] were always more important than fame.”
The Girlfriends star added, “That monster of fame that we see take down so many people with bright lights — my mother protected her light. I don’t know how. But she is a better parent than she is ‘Diana Ross.'”
One thing Tracee loved about her mother was her “glamorous” lifestyle. However, she said the Grammy-nominated artist never let it get to her head. “Our home was filled with beautiful things,” the Black-ish star explained to The New York Times in January 2015. “My mom had beautiful clothes; my mom is elegant; my mom is glamorous. But my mom is also really real, and I grew up with a mother who had babies crawling on her head and spitting up on her when she was wearing gorgeous, expensive things, and it was never an issue.”
Evan has also had some great times with his mom over the years. He hilariously recalled the day his wife, Ashlee Simpson Ross, gave birth to their first daughter, Jagger Snow, and he invited the “Baby Love” singer to the hospital. Although Diana and Ashlee’s parents were supposed to wait outside, the performer walked into the delivery room at the same time his daughter was arriving.
“I was like, ‘What are y’all doing?!’” Evan recalled to People in July 2018. But once he thought about who his mother was, the ATL star knew why the nurses let Diana pass. “Those nurses can’t stop my mom!” he laughed. “Like, Diana Ross just walks in.”
