Even though Bindi Irwin couldn’t have the wedding of her dreams, she still honored her late dad, Steve Irwin, in the best way possible.

“Where we got married was such a special place to dad,” the 21-year-old revealed to People about her March 25 ceremony to Chandler Powell. “It’s a beautiful little area where he had filmed for many years. It felt really wonderful and just meant to be.”

The location wasn’t the only thing that honored Steve. Bindi made sure she had a photo of her father nearby when it was time to say “I do.”

“We had dad’s picture with his dog Sui blown up on an easel,” she said. “So mom and Robert were standing right next to dad as we exchanged vows. We had a candle-lighting ceremony for him, and it really felt like he was there with us. It was a lovely moment of peace and happiness.” How sweet!

In September 2006, the crocodile hunter died at the age of 44 after he was attacked by a stingray. At the time, Bindi was only 8 years old. Since his death, the Australian TV personality has been honoring her father in every way possible. On what would have been his 58th birthday, Bindi took to Instagram to give the late star a shout-out.

“Dad, today is your birthday. I had an extra strong cup of tea just how you liked it. I hugged Mum for you and told her how much we love her,” she wrote next to a throwback pic of them both. “Robert and I went on a hike through the mountains you cherished. I watched one of your documentaries with Chandler and shared stories about you. I walked through your office in the zoo and smiled at our old family photographs. Today and every day I miss you and love you beyond description. You’re always with me.”

Steve’s legacy lives on in Bindi and his 16-year-old son, Robert Irwin. His widow and the children’s mother, Terri Irwin, has never remarried.
