Ever since Bindi Irwin and longtime love Chandler Powell got engaged in July 2019, fans have been dying to know how the future bride would honor late dad Steve Irwin during her wedding. Sweetly enough, the Australian conversationalist revealed the special way she involved the beloved Crocodile Hunter when she announced their surprise nuptials on March 25.

“We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now,” Bindi gushed alongside a photo of the newlyweds kissing at the altar. “We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding.”

The stunning TV personality — who was just 8 years old when her father tragically died after being stabbed in the heart by a stingray —explained how mom Terri Irwin, brother Robert Irwin and Steve were involved considering they “didn’t have guests” at their wedding amid the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

“Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory,” she marveled in the celebratory post. “We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this — stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!”

Celebrating these special milestones would be a lot more meaningful if the Australian zookeeper was still around, but Bindi knows her dad is proud no matter what. While attending an event in her family’s honor in May 2019 — just two months before Chandler, 23, got down on one knee on her 21st birthday — Bindi, the Jungle Girl star revealed how confident she believes Steve would be in marrying her beau of over five years.

“You know, Dad was so kind where he always said you had to follow your heart and do what you love and I think that that’s really wonderful,” Bindi exclusively shared with Closer Weekly at the time. “And my mom and brother have always been so supportive of me saying you just have to follow your heart through life, so I’m pretty lucky.”

Bindi adorably added, “So whenever I get married, if I get married, it’s pretty special.” Little did she know!

The father-daughter duo can be seen snapping a selfie while posing in front of a gorgeous backdrop at the Australian Zoo. Little Bindi planed a sweet kiss on dad Steve’s cheek while caressing her hand around the other side of his face.

For Father’s Day 2019, the brunette beauty took to Instagram and shared a sweet tribute for her late father. “Thank you for always teaching me to stand up for what I believe in,” Bindi gushed in the caption at the time. “I’m incredibly blessed to be your daughter and I love you so much.”

At another premiere of the Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course — this time in his native Australia — Steve and his family were all smiles while walking the red carpet. The beloved TV star was seen teasing and playing around with Terri and his daughter as the trio sported khaki zookeeper uniforms.

The sweet trio posed for more pics at the Australian Zoo. Bindi and Robert, who have been inspired by dad Steve, opened up to People in December 2019 about carrying on his legacy.

“I sure hope dad would be proud,” Bindi admitted. “We really do try every day to make him proud and follow in his footsteps. I hope that somewhere he’s out there going, ‘Yes! You did good!’” Robert echoed his older sister’s sentiment. “No matter where we go, or what we do, we’ll always come back here,” he said. “This is our passion. It’s a part of us and Australia Zoo will always be home.”
