Racecar driver Dario Franchitti, who is the estranged husband of actress Ashley Judd, announced his retirement from racing via his Twitter account on Nov. 14. The announcement comes a month after the driver was involved in a serious racing accident.
“A sad day but I’m eternally grateful…” wrote Dario, before posting a photo and letter explaining his decision.
"One month removed from the crash and based on the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing,” he wrote.
"They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop. Racing has been my life for over 30 years and it's really tough to think that the driving side is now over," he shares.
Dario suffered a concussion, broken right ankle and fractured vertebrae after crashing at the Houston Grand Prix on Oct. 6. Estranged wife Ashley rushed to his side after the accident, and expressed her thanks via Twitter for the outpouring of support and well wishes from fans.
Though the driver’s professional career has come to an end, his love life may be heating up. Reports suggest that Ashley and Dario are going to give their relationship another go.
