They are one of the most powerful couples on TV today, but while Chip and Joanna Gaines‘ relationship may seem perfect, they of course also have their ups and downs — especially when working with each other on their many projects.

“This is a very hard thing to do, to work together with someone you also have a relationship and a family with,” Chip, 44, explained to the audience while at INBOUND, annual conference held by HubSpot in Boston. “We definitely disagree. It’s not perfect. But for Jo and I, it really is a special bond we’re extremely proud of. We work really well together.”

The pair launched into fame with their popular HGTV show Fixer Upper — the duo are now working on their own cable network that will make its debut soon. However, through all their career decisions have also come obstacles, but the couple have realized that their differences in opinion is a positive thing.

“We’re this odd yin and yang, this whole opposites attract. It really was this powerful chemistry that happened early in our marriage,” Chip continued. “We enjoyed spending time together, taking on challenges together. I would argue that at the end of the day, we learned early that we’re a lot stronger and powerful when we’re pulling together, as opposites to pulling against each other. We’re a powerful force when we operate like that.”

Chip and his love, 41 celebrated 16 years of marriage in May — but what’s the key to their longterm bond? “Our secret ingredient to our marriage and working relationship is a solid mutual respect,” Chip revealed. “We definitely disagree. It’s not perfect. A lot of hard work goes into this, but if you can get to a mutual place of respect, you can change the world.” So great!

It isn’t just the famous pair under the same roof, they also share five kids — sons Drake, 14, Duke, 11, Crew, 1, and daughters, Ella, 13, and Emmie, 9.

We can’t wait to see where this family heads to next!
