For years we have seen him graced our television set as the host of iconic game show Jeopardy!, but there is a lot more to Alex Trebek than just tossing out trivia to thousands of people — he is also a devoted husband and father.
The 78-year-old was married to Elaine Trebek Kares from 1974 to 1981, but the pair did not have any kids before parting ways. Children entered the TV personality’s life while married to his second wife, Jean Currivan Trebek. The couple tied the knot in 1990, and currently share kids Matthew and Emily.
“My wife Jean and I have been together almost 29 years, and I was thinking about President Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life about what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife had been together 73 years. I thought, oh my gosh … if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together,” Alex once told People. However, Alex understands that not only has he been lucky to have such a wonderful wife, but two kids too.
“They’re really sharp, and have done their due diligence in their respective endeavors,” he told the outlet of his children. Jean added, “They’re both very compassionate, sensitive people. They’re really the best of Alex and I. You can talk to them. They’re our good friends.”
So let’s get to know these children!
The couple’s first born may not be behind a podium, telling people to pick question topics off a board, but he is quite successful in his own right. The 29-year-old, who graduated from Fordham University in 2015, is a restaurateur in New York City who co-owns a Mexican restaurant called Oso.
“There was just something about the hospitality industry that I fell in love with,” the young man once told Fordham News. “It’s great because it’s very free form in that it allows you to venture out into so many different fields: design, food, drinks, music, graphic design, and even just talking to people.”
Matthew also added that he doesn’t get his palette from his very famous father. “He would be fine eating chicken, white rice, and broccoli for the rest of his life,” he said. Although, he did reveal that his dad helped helped out in other ways, like following the construction progress and inspecting the space of his resturatant.

#HappyFathersDay! Today, Emily Trebek, Alex’s daughter, shares this memory about him: “When I was little, going to work with my dad was one of my favorite things to do. In our downtime on set, I loved to color and would often draw him several pictures and hang them all over his office as decoration. One morning, I drew him this ‘World’s Greatest Dad’ sign. He’s kept it on the front of his office door ever since, even 18 years later. I’m so proud to be his daughter. He is the most caring and supportive father and truly is the World’s Greatest Dad.” 👨👧
The 26-year-old, a graduate of LMU and Alex’s only daughter, works as a real estate agent in California and enjoys flipping houses. “I have always been interested in homes. When I was little, I wanted to be an architect. After graduating, I decided to get into real estate. As I was getting ready to flip my first house, I told my dad that I wanted to do it with him,” Emily once recalled.
“If dad can fix something, he will not have anyone else do it. I remember back when I was learning to drive, and I would accidentally run over a sprinkler head or path lighting in the driveway, we all knew dad would be out five seconds later fixing it. And I always watched him fix things, and wanted to learn.”
“I don’t have words to express how much it means to me that he helped. Just telling him how much I appreciate it and how much I thank him for guiding me through this and helping me sounds so insignificant. I don’t have the words to make it sound as significant as I feel.”
Unfortunately, Alex revealed that he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer on March 6, but we know that he will strive to spend as much time with his wife and his two incredible kids!
