How rude! Last night, Kate Middleton stepped out in a bespoke Alexander McQueen gown and Princess Diana’s famous Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara for a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace. And though we thought the Duchess of Cambridge looked gorgeous at the event, some others slammed Kate for wearing what looked like an “80’s prom” dress.

“That dress was ghastly like an old prom gown in the 80s and the material looked like a curtain,” one person wrote on Twitter with another similarly adding, “I’m sorry, Kate, but this dress is a long way from your best (nice bling though!).” A third person tweeted, “I don’t think I’m digging the fabric on this dress. Who let my girl out like this?! But honestly, as long as Kate is comfortable and happy in it then [whatever].”

At the Tuesday, Oct. 23 State Banquet — held to welcome King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands to England — Kate accessorized her blue dress with Diana’s diamond and pearl tiara and Queen Alexandra’s wedding necklace that was created in 1860 and has been previously worn by The Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth. The Duchess finished off her ensemble by wearing the Royal Family Order brooch on the left side of her dress.

The mom-of-three last wore the gorgeous Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara back in December 2017 at the annual winter party held at Buckingham Palace. She also wore the headpiece in July 2017 for a similar State Banquet at Buckingham Palace for Spanish royals King Felipe and Queen Letizia and in both December 2016 and December 2015 for Buckingham Palace Diplomatic Receptions.

In the past, Kate has also donned the Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara at her 2011 royal wedding to William and the Lotus Flower Tiara at a 2013 Diplomatic Reception and a 2015 State Banquet. Though some people didn’t love Kate’s latest gown, the Duchess of Cambridge will always be a style icon to us!
