One day after reports surfaced that Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Vanessa Trump, were headed for divorce, the couple has publicly confirmed their split. “After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways. We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time,” Don Jr., 40, and Vanessa, also 40, said in a statement to People.

After months of the duo reportedly living separate lives, Vanessa filed for divorce on Thursday, March 15 in Manhattan Supreme Court. She allegedly filed an uncontested proceeding, meaning that she doesn’t expect a big fight in court over assets or the five children she shares with her husband. The Trumps will likely handle those matters privately in their split. Earlier on Thursday, Don Jr. seemed to confirm that not all was well when he posted an Instagram photo of a sweet moment of himself with his daughter. “No matter what is going on, bedtime cuddling with the smurf puts a Yuge smile on my face,” he captioned the pic before adding the hashtags “#bedtime #daddysgirl #cuddle.”

Don Jr. — the son of President Donald Trump and Ivana Trump — and Vanessa previously tied the knot in 2005. Today, however, Vanessa allegedly hardly ever sees her husband. Don Jr. has taken many trips lately, including a high-profile visit to India, and he and his younger brother Eric Trump are also running the Trump Organization in their father’s stead.

“The problems have been there for a long time,” a source recently told Page Six of Don Jr. and Vanessa’s relationship. “The couple had hoped to stay together during the president’s time in office, but it is getting harder to resolve their issues. He’s never there.” Another source added, “Don Jr. has been busy traveling, which has contributed to their problems. Vanessa is a devoted mother, but she is increasingly lonely and alone in the house with the children.”

Plus, two of Page Six‘s sources alleged that Don Jr.’s personality is shifting in worrisome ways, evinced by his recent tweet linking antidepressants to mass murder and his tweet attacking a teen survivor of the Parkland shooting. (He also recently stoked controversy by saying he’d take away half of his three-year-old daughter’s Halloween candy “to teach her about socialism” and praising the impoverished population of India because “there’s still a smile on a face.”) “[He] appears to have changed recently, and friends are concerned about him,” a source revealed.

Don Jr.’s behavior notwithstanding, Vanessa is also reportedly struggling with her family’s increased visibility. “Vanessa by nature is a very low-key person, and she is uncomfortable with the attention her family is getting now the Trumps are on the world stage,” a source alleged. “She is also worried for her kids, particularly after she received the threatening letter containing the white powder.” (In case you missed that incident last month, Vanessa opened a letter addressed to Don Jr. and found white powder and an explicit threat inside. She was hospitalized, but the powder was later deemed nonhazardous.)

Another source revealed that for the time being, Don Jr. has a hectic schedule but is still living at home and is still “super-involved” in his kids’ lives, adding that his behavior is nothing out of the ordinary and his social media activity has always been “bold.” The insider continued, “Don and Vanessa are focused on their family, they are trying to do this quietly and privately… This has nothing to do with politics. This is a personal matter between two people.”
