Dick Van Dyke
Acclaimed film and TV comedian Dick Van Dyke admits he hasn’t always taken his health seriously. The 93-year-old started smoking when he was a teenager.
“It took a doctor showing me a diseased lung to shock me,” the Mary Poppins star revealed. “That was 20 years ago.”
The Hollywood legend claims the secret to longevity can be found in his daily breakfast. “I have Raisin Bran with blueberries,” Dick has said, “which are a good antioxidant.”
Indeed, blueberries are packed with potassium, folate, vitamin C and B6, all of which support heart health. Not only are they cholesterol-free, but the fiber content helps pull cholesterol away from the heart. And to keep himself in “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” shape, Dick still hits the gym every day.
“It becomes a habit, and you don’t feel right if you don’t do it,” the entertainer said. “The thing is getting there and doing something, even if it’s a little.

Shirley MacLaine
Although Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine has been making films nonstop since 1955, her role as the widow Martha Levinson in the hit series Downton Abbey introduced her to a new generation of fans. “The only thing in life I can’t do is a full Jane Fonda workout!” the 85-year-old joked.
“It’s all about staying the healthiest version of you.” Remarkably, Shirley only recently gave up smoking and claims to have no dietary restrictions. She feels drugs and alcohol are mostly to blame for premature deaths. What works for her as a curative? Spending time in her garden.
“It’s been a big goal of mine to get back to nature,” she has said. Medically speaking, she’s got a point. Moderate daily exposure to sun lowers blood pressure, improves brain, bone and skin health and reduces depression. It also helps keep your body clock in sync for a good night’s sleep.
For Shirley, how old she feels is more important than age. “In my mind, the oldest I go is 50,” she said. “Live in the moment, which is what I do.”

Jane Fonda
Since the 1980s, Jane Fonda has been at the forefront of health and fitness. In addition to her 49 films, the Oscar winner released her trailblazing, bestselling Jane Fonda’s Workout Book in 1981. Since then, she’s released 27 workout videos. Her most recent Prime Time exercise series is aimed at seniors.
“Aging is what happens,” said the 81-year-old star. “The question is how to age successfully.” Jane believes the most important habit to avoid is smoking, and the No. 1 activity to do is “keep moving.”
“I walk about an hour a day,” the star has said. “An older body has to do things differently, slowly and more carefully.” Jane’s diet is also a huge factor in her enduring good health. She only eats when she’s hungry and not simply because it’s mealtime.
Her daily menu is filled with fresh fruit, vegetables, chicken and fish. She tries to go “low on carbs,” she’s said, but admits she does eat them.
Every day, Jane also makes a point of consuming natural foods that are dark green, dark purple, yellow, orange and red. These colorful plant pigments — called anthocyanin — are powerful antioxidants that boost memory, eyesight and heart health. They also reduce the risk of cancer and strokes. “Keep trying to figure out how to make yourself a better person,” Jane has advised. “Don’t give up.”

Tony Bennett
Since 1952, Tony Bennett has released nearly 100 albums, with total sales of more than 50 million copies. His 2014 “Cheek to Cheek” duet with Lady Gaga even went to No. 1 on the charts. “People [still] admire the way I sound,” the 93-year-old confessed.
“They say, ‘You sound the way you did in 1950.’” The secret to the crooner’s remarkable seven-decade singing career is refreshing. “The best way to keep your voice in shape is a lot of water,” he shared, “and not iced either.” Besides providing the body with energy, water flushes out toxins, boosts the immune system, prevents sprains, cramps and headaches and increases brain function. But he doesn’t need to drink water during his act, and credits his vocal training for that.
“I know how to breathe properly,” he’s explained. Indeed, taking deep breaths improves blood flow and even acts as a natural pain reliever, aiding a singer’s performance. Though he usually goes solo on stage, Tony admits he’s had lots of behind-the-scenes help staying well. “I also have a wonderful wife, Susan, who makes sure that we eat very healthy foods and keep exercising,” he said. “The main thing is to have as much rest as possible and sleep well at night.”

Bob Barker
Iconic 96-year-old TV host Bob Barker has been a vegetarian since the 1980s. Surprisingly, though, he didn’t stop eating animal meat to improve his own health.
“I became a vegetarian out of concern for animals,” said the former Price Is Right host, adding, “I was a vegetarian for a very long time before I realized that many people become vegetarians out of concern for their health.” He says he understands where they’re coming from.
“I’m a staunch believer in it,” he explained, adding that after giving up meat, “I immediately began having more energy and feeling better.” Keeping a vegetarian diet helps prevent cancer and diabetes, lowers the risk of kidney and gallstones and helps maintain normal blood pressure. “I think it’s the healthiest way to live,” Bob said. “I recommend that you become a vegetarian and exercise if you want to enjoy the golden years.

Sophia Loren
Screen siren Sophia Loren has a long list of health inducing, beauty-preserving tips — but admits even she struggles to stick to them! “Eat very, very, very little things,” the 85-year-old Italian actress has said. However, she adds, eat a lot of them.
“I don’t starve, because I eat very much.” Sophia drinks freshly squeezed juices and eats fresh foods like salad, fruit and, occasionally, meat. She also recommends staying away from bread. “A lot of starch is no good, but some starch, yes,” the Oscar winner has said.
The body converts starchy foods like pasta, rice and potatoes into fat; starch also raises blood sugar levels, which can not only cause weight gain, but excessively tax the body in the process. Once a month for decades, Sophia also goes on a self-imposed three-day diet. She restricts her calorie intake to the bare minimum and replaces all “bad” food choices, like sweets, with fruit and veggies. Her typical menu includes salad, turkey, chicken and a small portion of pasta. For dessert she has a pear or an apple. As for staying in shape, Sophia admits she keeps things especially simple. “I walk, walk, walk, walk,” she’s said. “That’s very good for your heart.”
Indeed, walking just 30 minutes a day also improves mental health, boosts the immune system and reduces sugar cravings!
