For its first season, ABC has given The Conners a 10-episode commitment, no doubt due to the fact that at the time the decision was made, nobody was sure how the audience would react to a rebooted version of Roseanne without Roseanne Barr as the central character.

We got the first part of the answer to that question with the show’s Tuesday, Oct. 16 premiere, which drew an audience similar to the one that had watched the Roseanne finale last season, but far from the blockbuster numbers that show had upon its initial return. The other shoe will drop after episode two airs and there’s a chance to see how much of the audience will stick around beyond the curiosity factor that greeted the premiere.

The second episode of the show, “Tangled Up With Blue,” is airing on Tuesday, Oct. 23 (see plot info below). What’s surprising, however, is the fact that there was apparently an episode set up to air between the two that has gone missing. Originally scheduled for the 23rd was an episode called “The Separation of Church and Dan,” which has been pulled for one reason or another. The synopsis from ABC reads, “When Geena learns that D.J. hasn’t been taking Mary to church while she’s been away, she insists they go as a family to uphold her traditional values. To make matters worse, Mary refuses to attend without her cousins Harris and Mark, leaving D.J. in the last situation he wants to be in — at the mercy of Darlene. Meanwhile, Mark’s attempt to conduct an unbiased survey on the upcoming election for his school project goes south when Jackie volunteers to help.”

No word on when this episode will actually air (though presumably, it will), as next week’s episode of The Conners will continue the Roseanne tradition of celebrating Halloween (and there were some legendary episodes themed to the holiday on that show).
