The ski mecca of Aspen, CO sparkles for the Christmas holidays with heaps of powdery snow, homes decked out in fairy lights, and an influx of visitors including Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, and their family. Christmas is the time of year where families carry out traditions, and the loving couple is no different.

“We always trim the tree on Christmas Eve and we have a big meal,” Kurt told Closer Weekly in an exclusive interview. After dinner, “the grandkids put their pajamas on and hang up their stockings. We get the fire going and when it gets dark we always choose someone to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

This is a special Christmas for Kurt and Goldie’s family considering this is their first year celebrating the holiday with six grandchildren instead of five. Goldie’s daughter, Kate Hudson, gave birth to a beautiful little girl named Rani Rose on Oct. 2 alongside her boyfriend Danny Fujikawa. Giving birth to her first girl was a monumental moment for Kate, 39, so we have no doubt that this will be an extra special Christmas.

A new grandchild for the Russell-Hawn family means another kiddo to put to bed before Santa comes to town. Kurt, 67, and Goldie, 73, always warn the kids that they have to be asleep before Kris Kringle arrives.

“Santa shows up every single year,” confides Kurt’s stepson, Oliver Hudson, 42. “Usually we hear the bells. The kids lose their minds and rush to the big bay window. And you see Santa in the distance.”

Kurt won’t admit that he’s the one who plays Santa each Christmas Eve. “Watching him transform into St. Nick is pretty special,” says Oliver. “[But] now that he’s pushing 70, there may be some trade-offs.”

This season the famous family will also share their joy with a new Netflix movie, The Christmas Chronicles, starring Kurt and Oliver. “I wanted to bring what was real about Santa from my family’s history,” says Kurt, who plays the jolly old man. The role is “dedicated to my dad,” he adds sentimentally. “He was just the most magical, fantastic Santa Claus figure. We never knew if Dad really was Santa Claus. Christmas was always shrouded in mystery and wonder.”
