It’s beginning to look a lot like… a very different Christmas, when you consider that Kurt RussellThe Hateful Eight, The Fate of the Furious, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, among many others — is going to be donning the red suit and white beard of Santa Claus himself in the new Netflix holiday film, The Christmas Chronicles.

The film comes from producer Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone as well as the first two Harry Potter films, The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets, and producer of the third, The Prisoner of Azkaban. Based on the trailer, it looks like he’s played his role in making sure The Christmas Chronicles captures the sense of fun that’s a trademark of his films. That comes largely from the fact that this Santa is a wiseass (but not in a Bad Santa sort of way), knows all the pop culture references, can play the drums and doesn’t do that “ho-ho-ho stuff.” See for yourself in the trailer below!

Netflix describes it as a “a holiday adventure that tells the story of sister and brother, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa — as you’ve never seen him before — and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it’s too late.

Director Clay Kaytis points out, “No one is better suited than Kurt Russell to bring our version of a rugged, charismatic, and hilarious Santa Claus to life. From our first meeting, he completely threw himself into this iconic role — and grew an impressive beard in the process. It has been a dream come true to work with Kurt in creating what I believe will be the new definition of Santa Claus for generations to come.”

“Kurt is the definitive Santa Claus,” adds Chris Columbus. “Charismatic, tough when needed, with a wicked sense of humor. We’re really excited for audiences to see his performance onscreen and hope The Christmas Chronicles becomes a timeless classic.”

Only… uh, time will tell.

The Christmas Chronicles will launch globally on Netflix Nov. 22.
