Getting a style stamp of approval from Anna Wintour is basically like winning the Super Bowl for football players. So when a fan recently asked the Vogue editor-in-chief for her opinion on Meghan Markle‘s royal wedding dress in a new video series called “Go Ask Anna,” fashionistas and royal admirers were suddenly dying to know if she loved it or hated it.

“I think she’s amazing and the royal wedding had the whole world watching and I think that her choice was brilliant,” the 69-year-old gushed of Meg’s Givenchy dress by Clare Waight Keller for her May 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry. “It was sophisticated. It was chic. It was grown-up. It was an English designer, albeit one that was working for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world: Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong.”

It wasn’t just her style that Anna was impressed with, though. “The fact that she chose to walk down the aisle by herself, I also thought spoke for an independent woman,” the Condé Nast artistic director explained. “I think the picture of the Duchess of Sussex’s mother [Doria Ragland] at the chapel at the wedding was so inspiring to so many women, men all over the world.” So true!

Anna, who was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 2017 for her contributions to journalism and fashion, even stood up for how Meghan’s been running her royal household since marrying Harry. “I read somewhere that there were members of the royal household that were confused and upset that she woke up so early at 5 a.m.,” the mom-of-two said.

“She’s a normal, California girl — gets up early and does yoga and meditates and also sent a lot of text messages. I mean, what do they expect? She was going to send messages by pigeon?” Anna quipped about rumors Meg, 37, is hard to deal with.

It seems like the brunette beauty isn’t the only royal that Anna would happily defend. In fact, the UK native expressed her admiration for both the mom-to-be and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. “I think the two Duchesses, the young Duchesses that they have in Britain, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, are going to keep the royal family afloat quite frankly,” Anna stated. We couldn’t agree more!
