Dressed in a sparkly black formfitting gown, Rita Wilson looked every inch a glamorous Broadway star when she arrived for the 69th Annual Tony Awards in NYC.

“She lit up the red carpet,” says an onlooker. Rita beamed so brightly it was difficult to believe the actress, 58, had undergone a double mastectomy due to breast cancer two months ago. “I feel great,” she told reporters at the June 7 event. “I am very, very grateful.”

Rita’s quick recovery has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise difficult period for the actress and her husband of 27 years, Tom Hanks — and their worries aren’t over yet. Though Rita says she’s “won” the fight against cancer, a week before the awards show, the couple’s long-troubled son Chet Hanks was accused of causing $1,800 in damages to his London hotel room. “They fear he’s on a downward spiral again,” confides a family insider.

The details of the May 29 hotel incident certainly suggest that. After reportedly drinking at a club, Chet, an aspiring rapper who goes by the name Chet Haze, allegedly returned to the Arora International Hotel and flew into a “loud rampage” around 3:25 a.m., which resulted in the call to police, says the insider. “We have been given the name of a suspect — a 24-year-old man from the U.S.A. — and we are currently working to try to trace him so he can be interviewed,” a Sussex, England, police rep tells Closer.

It’s not the first time Tom, 58, and Rita have worried about Chet, who went to rehab last winter after admitting he’d been struggling with substance abuse since he was 16. “It was their caring intervention that led to his rehab stay last year,” explains the friend.

Afterward, Chet seemed to be taking his sobriety seriously, even joining his family, younger brother Truman, 19, and older step-siblings, Colin, 37, and Elizabeth, 33, at Rita’s bedside after her breast cancer surgery. “Even though Chet put them through some difficulties, the whole family rallied,” says the friend. But it wasn’t long before Chet was back in trouble, which doesn’t surprise addiction specialist Clare Waismann. “Most drug abusers are self-medicating feelings of stress,” she explains. “Any form of extreme stress, like a parent’s illness, could be cause for a relapse.”
