Shirley Temple was adored by millions for her irresistible charm and immeasurable talent, but only a few knew her true character and down-to-earth nature.
In the new issue of Closer Weekly, those close to Shirley, including her Woodside, Calif., neighborhood friends, Jamis and Mike, recall their fond memories of America’s sweetheart.
"She had a great sense of humor. Shirley Temple is a drink that we sell a lot here. Kids order it. She and I talked about it one time and she said that she wishes they would have named a vodka drink after her!" Jamis, the owner of a restaurant Shirley and her husband frequently dined at, tells Closer.
"You knew you were talking to someone who was one of the most famous people in the world, yet Shirley was very relaxed,” Jamis adds.
Mike, a close friend of Shirley’s and manager of her local market, recalls another story illustrating Shirley's approachable personality despite her extraordinary stardom.
"She asked me one time, ‘Guess who came over for dinner last night?’ I couldn't guess and she told me, ‘Michael Jackson!’ I told her to get out of town and asked her what she served him! She replied, ‘Chicken and some potatoes.’”
On a more serious note he tells Closer, "Our town will remember her for the person she really was. I think we will just miss her personality and the honor of seeing her. No one will ever be as big of a celebrity as she was in her time. I hope history remembers what an intelligent, super-talented woman she was.”
