To fans, Alan Alda is known for his beloved role of Hawkeye Pierce in the war television series M*A*S*H. To his family, however, the six-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner is a doting father and husband.
The legendary actor — who is the proud dad of daughters Eve Alda, Elizabeth Alda and Beatrice Alda, with his longtime wife, Arlene Alda — has been one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars ever since he landed his role on M*A*S*H in 1972.
Although the iconic dramedy earned him the majority of his fame and fortune, Alan treasures his family life more than anything else in the world — and is somehow able to balance it all with superstardom. In addition to becoming a father of three, he has also maintained a marriage in Hollywood for more than 60 years, having married Arlene in March 1957.
“My wife says the secret of a long marriage is a short memory,” Alan exclusively told Closer Weekly at the New York Film Festival premiere of Marriage Story, adding that it “seems to work!”
“I don’t think we spoil each other, we just love each other,” he added. “Without her, I wouldn’t do an awful lot because every time I’m leaving the house to do some work, she says, ‘You’re going to be great.’ And I say the same thing to her. She’s a writer and a photographer, busy all the time, and I’m very proud of her.”
Alan — who suffers from Parkinson’s disease — also had the sweetest reason when he revealed to Closer Weekly at the New York City premiere of Marriage Story which film he had the “most fun” making throughout the years. That honor, it turned out, went to the 1981 movie The Four Seasons “because I wrote it and directed it, two of my daughters were in it [and] my wife photographed it.” Talk about a family affair!
Although juggling fatherhood, a healthy relationship and a Hollywood career throughout the decades can be more difficult that one can imagine, Alan and Arlene’s daughters clearly turned out to be three incredible women.
