Even though Prince William had royal duties to attend to on Kate Middleton’s 37th birthday on Wednesday, Jan. 9, the Duke of Cambridge made it up to his wife by gifting her with a pair of “custom diamond earrings!” A royal insider exclusively dished to Closer Weekly, “He always puts a lot of thought into Kate’s presents.”

As William, 36, visited London Royal Hospital during the day, Kate spent much of her birthday with her kids, Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, 8 months. Later that evening, William organized a small dinner for his brunette beauty at their Kensington Palace home with a few close friends.

The source told Closer that guests toasted the Duchess with sparkling champagne and helped themselves to the feast that William had thoughtfully organized. “He brought in a top chef to cook a lavish five-course dinner,” the insider stated. The party’s menu included shrimp risotto and perfectly grilled steak followed by Kate’s favorite sticky toffee pudding — yum!

The intimate birthday bash was filled with many surprises including a sweet token of friendship from Kate’s sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, also 37. “She sent over a little gift and wrote Kate a heartwarming birthday card,” the insider said of the Duchess of Sussex. Perhaps Meg’s gesture was a peace offering, considering the source added that both women are eager to end the rumors of a rift between them. “Meghan’s at her wit’s end over all the negative press, and she hopes her gesture toward Kate will help,” the insider said.

And apparently, it did. “Their relationship is still developing,” the source said, adding that Kate appreciated Meghan’s sweet act of kindness.

With Meghan and Prince Harry’s first royal baby expected to arrive this spring, some royal fans are hoping Baby Sussex will help bring Kate and Meg even closer together. In late-November, an insider told Life & Style that mom-of-three Kate has been helping pregnant Meghan as she prepares to welcome her first baby.

“Meghan is nervous about the birth and has also been turning to Kate for tips on how to deal with balancing royal life with being a mom,” the royal source dished. “After having three children, Kate is a pro at motherhood and has been advising Meghan on what lies ahead.” Once Meg and Harry’s baby arrives, we imagine the sisters-in-law will be getting together with their kiddos quite often!
