Prince George Isn’t the Only Royal Attending School at Thomas’s Battersea (Not Kidding!)
While all eyes were on Prince George yesterday as he arrived at Thomas’s Battersea for his first day at school, the third in line to the throne was not the only member of the royal family starting their education at the same prep school. Maud Windsor — the four-year-old daughter of Lord Frederick and Lady Sophie Windsor — will join George in the same reception class.
Like the prince, she was accompanied to the school gate for the first time by her father. George’s mother, Kate Middleton, was unable to join her husband as planned due to suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum — a severe form of morning sickness — during her recently announced third pregnancy.
Like George, Maud wore Thomas’s navy and red uniform, swapping shorts and a V-neck sweater for a skirt, button-down cardigan, and bow in her hair. Lord Frederick Windsor, or “Freddie,” is the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, first cousin twice removed to Queen Elizabeth, meaning that his daughter Maud is a distant cousin of young Prince George.
Freddie’s wife, Sophie (née Winkleman), is an actress who is perhaps best known for her recurring role as Big Suze on the British sitcom Peep Show. Born in LA on Aug. 15, 2013, Maud counts Princess Eugenie among her godparents and was baptized at St James’s Palace (like George). Maud has one younger sister, Isabella Windsor, who was born on Jan. 16, 2016.
Ben Thomas, the principal of Thomas’s London Day Schools, was adamant that the prince — who will use the name George Cambridge in the classroom — will be treated just like any other pupil. “Our aim for him, as well as for all of our pupils, is to provide a safe and secure and happy environment where he feels supported by a kind and loving community,” he said. “That’s all we will be trying to achieve for him There won’t be any special treatment at all.”
Discussing what George and his new classmates can expect from their first day, he explained, “He is going to be focusing on his classroom. He will be introduced to his form teacher and his teaching assistant. It will be a very gentle introduction to the school… The emphasis will be on a very, very gentle start.”
