Our hearts are breaking for Meghan McCain. The View co-host sadly lost her father, John McCain, to brain cancer in late August at age 81, and today, her friend has revealed she’s still mourning his tragic death.

“She’s okay. She’s still working through it,” S.E. Cupp, 39, told host Andy Cohen during Watch What Happens Live on Monday, Sept. 17. “She’s taking a leave before she comes back into it all.” Meghan has not been on The View since the talk show kicked off its 22nd season on Sept. 4.

She added, “It’s been really hard on her. I have to say, you’ve been really, really good to her and her family.”

Just yesterday, Meghan, 33, shared a screenshot from a 53-minute phone call with her dad to Instagram with the caption, “The death of a beloved is an amputation. – C.S. Lewis (old screenshot from one of our Sunday calls I found on my phone).”

Meghan previously shared an emotional eulogy at her father’s funeral on Sept. 1. “I am feeling loss I have never wanted to feel. My father is gone,” she said. “This love my father had for my mother was the most fierce and lasting of them all. He was endlessly present for us. And though we did not always understand it, he was always teaching. He didn’t expect us to be like him. His ambitions for us was to be better than him. As a girl I did not fully appreciate what I fully appreciate now: how he suffered, and how he wore it with this stoic silence that was once the mark of an American man.”

“Dad, I love you. I always have,” Meghan added. “All that I am, all that I hope, all that I dream is grounded in what you taught me. You loved me and you showed me what love must be. Your greatness is woven into my life. It is woven into my mother’s life.”

She concluded, “My father is gone. My father is gone and my sorrow is immense but I know his life and I know it was great because it was good.” We’re continuing to keep Meghan in our thoughts during this difficult time.
