How do Katie Couric and her banker husband John Molner keep the newlywed feeling alive four years after they wed? They keep taking honeymoons! “He plans a date vacation every year,” said Katie, 61, in an interview with Us Weekly. She recently returned from a jaunt through India with John, 55. “We go someplace fun and exotic. This year, I had no idea [where we were going],” Katie said. “He planned everything! Can’t get much better than that, right?”

Not only is John an excellent travel companion, but he’s also “got this incredibly dry and wry sense of humor,” Katie once gushed to People. “He’s just fun to be around.”

Varanasi is one of the most intense places I’ve ever visited. Massive sensory overload in what’s been called “the city of learning and burning.” We visited the #Ganges river first to watch the sun rise and see the flurry of activity on the street (even at 5:45 am!) We returned to the #ganges for a ceremony of Thanksgiving with a sea of humanity on the banks of the river. It’s called the city of light (vs Paris-lightS) and is one of the holiest places in the Hindu religion. People were bathing there to wash away their sins…some were just taking a dip and others were lathering up, while still others were doing their laundry and hitting their clothes against rocks in the river (ergo the term stone washed) Millions of people come here every year including many elderly people who wish to die in this sacred place and be cremated on the holiest ghats (or stairs) to achieve salvation. We saw at least thirty people being cremated the night we visited. When I asked Ajay our guide if he felt it was intrusive and invasive to have people watching from the river he told me death is a celebration and to bear witness is honoring Hinduism. If a woman predeceases her husband, she is dressed in the same sari she was married in. After we observed the cremations, we each lit a small candle surrounded by roses 🌹 in a little cup and said a prayer for people who had died before placing them in the water. I said a prayer for Jay, my sister Emily and my parents. I was so moved that John (yes that’s his first name) told me afterwards he said a prayer for the same people I did. It was beautiful to see the candles all floating on the river, like little stars on a dark, watery sky. The service was remarkable too. Getting home in a rickshaw was harrowing and very, very (!) loud with all the honking cars, motor scooters, pedestrians and cows in the street. I can’t believe there aren’t more accidents here! I will share some of our adventures in my stories tomorrow (so many pictures!) and realize this photo may feel slightly incongruous given what I’ve just described. Katie and John got married in the backyard of Katie’s beautiful home in 2014. Though they should probably be over the honeymoon stage of marriage, Katie and John just can’t seem to get enough of each other. “They really enjoy each other’s company, and Katie loves having a partner to come home to and have date nights with,” an insider previously told Closer Weekly about the couple’s relationship. “Katie and John are so happy!”

Katie’s long road to happiness proved to be a tough journey for the reporter after her first husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer in 1998. Katie had to learn how to find love again and fully immerse herself in a relationship. “It took me a long time [to marry again] because I loved being married and I love being married now,” Katie told People. “And I’m not a solitary person. I like company. And John is so funny.”

This is Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, a five story tall building with 365 windows where women from the royal court would hang out, gossip and check out the action on the street below. It was built in 1799 but along with other structures, the reigning maharaja painted the town pink to honor the Prince of Wales (Prince Albert Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria) when he visited the city in 1876. The King of Jaipur took it a step further and made it illegal for buildings in the old city to be painted any other color than “Jaipur pink” which is really more of a salmon or terra cotta color. The city is an experience in sensory overload…I tried to capture it in stories but you really have to experience it for yourselves! We are now on to Varanasi! She remembered meeting John after a mutual friend put them in contact with one another. And since it took John a while to call Katie, she recalled “badgering” her friend until John finally picked up the phone to chat. “He finally asked me out, we met at a restaurant and what can I say?” she recalled. “He had me at hello.”
