Christmas morning is filled with joy and love as families gather around their Christmas tree to open presents. But as for the royals’ merry celebration, Kate Middleton reportedly wasn’t afraid to share how excited her kiddos, five-year-old Prince George and three-year-old Princess Charlotte, were for Santa’s arrival.

While on their way to the church service on Tuesday, Dec. 25, the Duchess of Cambridge apparently revealed her youngsters broke royal tradition by getting up “very early” to open their gifts! “I said to Kate, ‘were the children up early’ and she said ‘very early, but it was lovely to see their faces,'” a woman named Jill told reporters, according to Hello!.

Even though opening gifts early isn’t out of the norm for the British monarchy, typically presents are opened on Christmas Eve. These early offerings are usually gag gifts, too! In 2013, Prince Harry famously gave his grandma Queen Elizabeth a shower cap that said: “Ain’t Life A B—h.” Kate also once gifted Harry with a grow-your-own-girlfriend kit. Too funny!

“The British royals still follow the German tradition of opening presents on Christmas Eve,” Marlene Koenig, royal historian and founder of Royal Musings, explained to Hello! of the royal family’s tradition of opening presents on the eve of Christmas. “The members of the family who are present at Sandringham exchange gifts, usually not expensive. The gifts are put out on a trestle table after tea time.”

The detailed day of the family’s Christmas comes after weeks of speculation that Kate and Meghan Markle were having an apparent rift in their royal relationship. However, the 36-year-old revealed that her kids were over the moon as they opened their presents alongside Meg and their husbands, Harry and Prince William. The “fab four” were also all smiles as the walked from the Queen’s Sandringham home to St. Mary Magdalene Church!

While this marks Meghan’s second Christmas as a member of the royal family, this is the last Christmas for her and Harry as a family-of-two. By the time December comes around next year, Meg, 37, and Harry, 34, will be the proud parents of their first child! Meg is expected to give birth to the couple’s little bundle of joy in spring 2019. Looks like George, Charlotte, and their little brother, Prince Louis, will have someone else to open presents with next year!
