It has sadly been nearly 10 years since The Dark Knight star passed away at age 28 from cardiac arrest after an accidental overdose of prescription medications in January 2008.

In the years following Heath’s death, his friends and family have candidly spoken out about the Oscar winner‘s prolific life and tragic passing — and now, a new documentary about the star is coming to TV.

“Heath was the most alive human,” musician Ben Harper said in the documentary, I Am Heath Ledger. “And if it wasn’t on the edge, it didn’t interest him.”

Throughout his showbiz career, Heath was known as one of the most compelling actors of his generation for his roles in films including Brokeback Mountain, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Patriot, Monster’s Ball, and Lords of Dowtown.

“He wanted fame — and then when he got it, he didn’t want it,” one of Heath’s closest friends, filmmaker Matt Amato, said.

In a previous interview, Heath’s father, Kim Ledger, opened up about his son’s passing — and heartbreakingly revealed he believes Heath’s untimely death was “totally his fault.”

“He reached for [the pills]. He put them in his system. You can’t blame anyone else in that situation. That’s hard to accept because I loved him so much and was so proud of him,” he confessed.

“Heath mixed a couple of drugs together with sleeping tablets and he’s gone forever,” Kim added. “That’s something [my wife, Sally, Kate and I] just have to deal with.”
