Usually, when a film is released from a recognizable source, it comes in the form of, say, “Steven Spielberg Presents” or something similar. But in the case of one of this summer’s potential blockbusters — which brings together Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham — we’re being told “Fast & Furious Presents” the first spinoff in the franchise’s history, Hobbs & Shaw.
Truth be told, if you’ve got it, you might as well flaunt it — and Fast & Furious has definitely got it. The series began in 2001 with the $38 million The Fast and the Furious. Flash forward to 2017’s The Fate of the Furious (eighth in the series) and the budget had climbed to $250 million, with the series as a whole pulling in $5.1 billion at the global box office. Next April will see the release of film No. 9, while April of 2021 will herald film 10. For now, though, we’ve got Hobbs & Shaw. Check out the newly-released Hobbs & Shaw trailer above and the first trailer below!
In the film, which takes place two years after the events of The Fate of the Furious, Dwayne’s federal agent Luke Hobbs is forced to join forces with enemy turned ally Deckard Shaw (Jason) to try and stop an international terrorist named Brixton, played by Idris Elba. While the series has stretched credibility all along (the action is just insane), this one, based on the trailer, is moving pretty close to the level of superhero movie in that Brixton has somehow been made bulletproof and has super strength.
Also starring is Vanessa Kirby as Deckard’s sister, Hattie Shaw, a member of MI6 (the same spy agency, by the way, that employs James Bond — see the little tidbits you pick up from us?); Roman Reigns as Luke Hobbs’ brother, Helen Mirren as Shaw’s mother, Magdalene; and Eiza González as the mysterious Madam X. The script is by Chris Morgan, who has written five entries in the series (including the original), with David Leitch serving as director. David is certainly no stranger to action, his credits including John Wick, No Good Deed, Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw will be released on August 2, 2019.
