More than two years after Drew Barrymore finalized her divorce from third husband Will Kopelman, the actress has opened up about her failed marriage in an emotional Instagram post shared on Friday, Dec. 21. “Once upon a time… I remember reading an article that said I had gotten my happy ending after all. Looking at this picture, it sure looks that way. And then, like many times in life for all of us, our plans change and our dreams are adjusted,” Drew, 43, captioned a red carpet throwback photo of the former couple.

“But that doesn’t mean that every second wasn’t worth it. And if that DeLorean time machine pulled up every day, I would do it all over again. After all, I did get my dream. Two healthy girls,” Drew continued. “Will and I continue to marvel at what we made and try to be the best co-parents we can be. It’s not always easy and the point is… nothing in life is. But it doesn’t mean that any bitter outweighs the sweet!”

The 50 First Dates star and Will, 40 — who works as an art consultant and is the son of former Chanel CEO Arie Kopelman— first started dating back in 2011, announced their engagement in January 2012, and tied the knot in June 2012. During their four-year marriage, the pair welcomed two daughters, Olive Barrymore Kopelman, 6, and Frankie Barrymore Kopelman, 4, together. In April 2016, Drew and Will released a joint statement revealing they were sadly headed for divorce.

“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family. Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually, you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on,” the duo told People. “Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”

During a previous appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Drew described her split from Will as a “nightmare.” She continued, “[Divorce] was just like my worst nightmare. I so wanted to raise kids in this ultra-traditional way and do everything so the polar opposite of my experience.” Drew and Will seem like they’re on good terms today and great co-parents to Olive and Frankie!
