This year, Meghan Markle and her mother, Doria Ragland, will likely be spending Christmas with the royal family. So that means that they’ll have to adhere to all of the quirky traditions that Queen Elizabeth‘s family does over the holiday like being weighed before and after they eat their Christmas meal. Yes, you read that right!

According to Grazia Daily and Majesty editor Ingrid Seward, this strange tradition started back when King Edward VII was still in power. Apparently, he started weighing his family members before and after they would eat on Christmas because he was concerned about everyone getting enough food and wanted to make sure no one went hungry. That’s nice, we guess.

But, according to Grazia, Queen Elizabeth’s family enjoys three big meals on Christmas Day alone, so is this tradition still really necessary? We’re sure everyone will have more than enough to eat! Seward revealed that the royals still weigh themselves today after their Christmas meal just for fun using antique scales… so great ready for that, Meghan and Doria!

Before Christmas comes, Meghan is reportedly planning on hosting a Thanksgiving meal for her new royal family members. A friend close to the Duchess of Sussex recently told Hollywood Life“[Meghan] is planning to host an American style Thanksgiving feast at her new Kensington Palace apartment and she’s going to be making it all from scratch!”

The friend added, “She’s an amazing cook and loves making big holiday dinners. Since Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated in England, there are no plans to have a dinner, so it’s the perfect chance for her to host something.” Hopefully, Meghan will put her cooking skills to the test and make a traditional American Thanksgiving desert like apple pie — yum!
