She will be missed. On this year’s Mother’s Day, Laura Bush took to Instagram to announce the death her mom, Jenna Hawkins Welch, who sadly passed away on Friday, May 10 at the age of 99. The former first lady shared an emotional tribute to announce the heartbreaking loss.

“This Mother’s Day, I’m remembering my mother, who passed away at the age of 99 on Friday morning,” Laura, 72, wrote in the caption alongside a sweet picture of her late mother. “Jenna Hawkins Welch was a true daughter of West Texas who loved her family, books and nature. My memories of reading with her and stargazing under the Midland sky are reminders of the passions that she nurtured in me. Our family is grateful for her long and wonderful life. We miss her dearly.”

Laura’s daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, also took to social media to honor her beloved grandmother. “Waking up thinking of my precious namesake, Jenna Welch who passed away Friday. How lucky I was to be named after a woman who taught me how to slow down and appreciate every bird, and every plant in West Texas,” the Today host captioned a collage of pics she shared to her Instagram. “She read us poetry and taught us about every constellation in the sky. Her kindness and graciousness were as expansive as the West Texas horizon. So happy she’s reunited with her great love, our Pa after almost 25-years apart. Thinking of my mama too who lost her little mama right before Mother’s Day.”

Fans of the former First Family took to the comment section of each of the ladies’ posts to send their heartfelt messages. “Mrs. Bush — the deepest, most heartfelt thoughts of the nation are with you, President [George W.] Bush, and your daughters at this time. I can’t imagine the sorrow and pain [you all] must be feeling but we lift [you all] up together,” one user wrote to Laura. “Sending you and your sweet family many prayers and hugs,” said another.

While her obituary in the local Midland Reporter-Telegram gives a lot of insight on her incredible life — like the fact that Jenna grew up during the Great Depression in Canutillo, Texas, and later moved to Midland, Texas, after her husband, Harold Welch, returned home from Europe after fighting in World War II — details on the funeral were minimal. The obituary did state that some sort of procession was held in honor of her life on Saturday, May 11.

Jenna’s death is just the Bush family’s most recent heartbreak. Last year, former first lady Barbara Bush died in April, while her husband, former president George H.W. Bush passed away in November.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bushes during this difficult time.
