What she thought could’ve been a fun mother-son date turned into a situation filled with confusion for Jennifer Garner‘s son, Samuel, after the Peppermint actress recently took her six-year-old little boy to see the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) perform The Nutcracker.

The 46-year-old shared the funny story of their experience during her speech at ABT’s holiday benefit on Monday, Dec. 17. “He looked over and he said, ‘Mom, I don’t know if I get this movie. I’m not really getting the plot. They are not talking,'” Jen told the audience.

After taking ballet lessons as a kid, the mom-of-three later became a longtime fan of the NYC-based ballet company. “It is my lifelong dream to be up here celebrating the American Ballet Theatre,” she gushed at the special event. “And lucky for you, I will not be dancing tonight. But that’s my holiday gift.”

Even though she wasn’t in front of the curtain performing, she was behind it at one point during the night. Before The Nutcracker show, Jen took to Instagram to share a video of herself playing stage manager, makeup artist and hairstylist, costume inspector, and dressing room decorator. The Alias alum even waved a foam finger in the crowd while dressed in a marching band costume!

“Thank you to all of the @abtofficial dancers and crew for letting me play along — I was in heaven being with all of you,” she wrote in the caption. “Even more — I loved every minute of #ABTNutcracker @segerstromarts. @mistyonpointe was the dreamiest Clara. Alabama’s finest, @mbhoven, was the most regal prince.”

Jen and Samuel’s outing comes days after Jen was spotted taking her kiddos to church with her ex-husband Ben Affleck. The former flames, whose divorce was finalized in October, are reportedly in a “good place” today, however, it wasn’t an easy road for them to get there.

A friend of the couple recently revealed to People that Ben, 46, and Jennifer are trying to figure out the best way to co-parent their three kids, Violet, 12, Seraphina, 9, and Samuel. “Jen and Ben continue to work together to make their parenting as seamless as possible,” the friend dished. “They really like to do things as a family, be it outings, church, cooking or watching movies.”

Even though Samuel was scratching his head at The Nutcracker, we can’t imagine the two didn’t have a really good time together. “The mice made me laugh, the snowflakes made me dream, the bees made me tired. If you want to feel holiday happiness, find and see your local Nutcracker!” Jen wrote on Instagram of their night out. So cute!
