It wasn’t that long ago when George Clooney rushed to Meghan Markle’s defense after she received a lot of public scrutiny for being a royal. In fact, the actor said that the duchess was being “pursued and vilified” just like Princess Diana was shortly before her death. And during a recent appearance on Good Morning Britain, he explains why he wanted to stand up to her haters in the first place.

“She’s a really kind and smart and intelligent young woman and they’re a really wonderful, loving couple,” the 57-year-old said about the former actress, 37, and her 34-year-old husband, Prince Harry, and added that it’s hard to not listen to negative comments about them. “Most of it you can just shrug off and not pay attention to, but sometimes it’s unkind.”

The Oscar-winner has had enough of the negative backlash that the Suits alum has been receiving from the public. “I think it’s a little unfair,” he explained. “I’ve seen it, when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing and it seemed … to be a little unjust since she hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life.”

George previously defended Meghan at a press panel for his new Hulu series Catch-22. “They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere,” he said about how the young royal is being treated by the press. “She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and it’s history repeating itself. We’ve seen how that ends.”

As a friend of the royal family, George will always come to Meghan’s defense when she needs it. When her family problems were too much for the Duchess of Sussex to bear, he reportedly allowed her and Harry to vacation at his Lake Como house in Italy and according to an insider, they all had a great time!

“The Clooneys had personally invited Meghan and Harry to their home at the beginning of the summer with an open invitation,” a source previously told Us Weekly. “They spent the entire weekend at their home and enjoyed the privacy and security the Clooneys had for them there.”
