Can you imagine what Terri Irwin‘s life would be like if she didn’t have kids with her late husband, Steve Irwin?! Well in a new interview with People, Terri revealed she and Steve initially didn’t want to have children, but eventually, Steve ended up changing her mind.

“When we got married, Steve said, ‘I’m just an action man. I don’t know how we would ever have kids.’ And I didn’t feel strongly one way or another,” she recalled. “But after almost six years of marriage, he burst through the door one evening and said, ‘We’ve got to have children! Who do we leave all this to? Who will carry it on?’ I go, ‘Just because you have kids doesn’t mean they’re going to want to do what you do.’ And he said, ‘Oh, they will. They definitely will.'”

Steve just had a hunch about his offspring that he couldn’t ignore and once he got Terri on board, the couple later welcomed their first child, Bindi Irwin, now 20, back in 1998 and then their son, Robert Irwin, now 15, in 2003. Terri and her two kids are now the stars of a new Animal Planet show called Crikey! It’s the Irwins.

“Since we were tiny, [the zoo has] been a part of who we are,” Bindi gushed about her childhood, and Robert added, “After school, I’ll go around on my scooter and jump in with the tortoises to say g’day or wrangle some snakes.” Just like Steve predicted, his kids developed a passion for taking care of animals just like he had!

“Every day is a new adventure,” Robert said. Today, Bindi has been having an adventure of her own with her boyfriend, Chandler Powell. “We just love traveling together and working in the zoo,” Chandler gushed. “We’re enjoying life!”
