It’s been a tough few months for Sandra Bullock. On Thursday, Dec. 20, the 54-year-old actress appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and chatted with host Ellen DeGeneres about how she recently dealt with losing both her dad and two dogs within weeks of each other. “Life, I realized, happens whether you schedule it or not. That just blew my mind this year,” Sandra began.

“My dad died, and then while my dad was failing, we get a call from the nanny… that our dog Ruby, [who had two legs], had a stroke. And I’m like, ‘What, what?’ I was like, ‘Just put her on life support. Do something.’ And they go, ‘We can’t. She’s suffering.’ So I was like, ‘Okay, there’s a reason for this.’ Dad’s settled. We fly home,” she continued. Watch Ellen’s interview with Sandra in the video below!

“Days later, ‘You’re dad’s not doing well.’ The nanny comes into the room. She’s got a look on her face. I’m like, ‘What did the kids [Louis and Laila] do?’ She’s like, ‘I need to speak to you in the bedroom.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ And she goes, ‘Your other dog has a heart tumor, and she’s going to die in three days,'” the actress explained to Ellen.

Sandra said she at first thought, “I’m going to be fine,” but later realized that the emotional toll of losing three loved ones was too much to bear. “And then a week later I’m in the bathtub crying and the kids are like, ‘Is Mommy okay?’ Everyone is like, ‘Just leave Mommy in the bathtub. She’s going to be fine,'” she added.

Sandra lost her beloved father, John W. Bullock, on Sept. 18. The Bullock family patriarch died in his hometown of Birmingham, AL “surrounded by family and friends,” Sandra’s boyfriend, Bryan Randall, wrote on Instagram at the time. John had reportedly battled illness for some time before his passing.

In mid-October, Sandra revealed she’d been having a “crappy few weeks” after losing her dad and pets Poppy and Ruby while making a speech about friend Sarah Paulson at the 25th ELLE Women in Hollywood Celebration in LA. “I was going to write a nice speech about all the things I like about Sarah Paulson… But it’s been a crappy few weeks. My dad died, both of my dogs died. You turn on the television or computer and it’s endless tragedies and it seems like more than ever now if you have a vagina, you have to be a fighter as well. So I don’t feel nice. So I decided tonight I’m going to talk about all the things I don’t like about Sarah,” Sandra joked, according to Us Weekly.

Following the death of Sandra’s dad, John, Us Weekly reported that the actress’ boyfriend, Bryan, has been her “rock” during this difficult time. “[Bryan] has been a constant source of support… Bryan makes her feel safe and completely takes care of her. [He’s her] rock. It’s a sad time. Sandy is surrounded by Bryan, the kids, and her family,” a source said of the couple.
