Who could forget when President George W. Bush kindly gave a mint to former First Lady Michelle Obama at Sen. John McCain‘s funeral in September and then again at his father George H.W. Bush’s funeral in early December. Michelle’s fans loved seeing those sweet moments and when the new author recently stopped in San Jose, CA to promote her new book, Becoming, Michelle opened up about George’s gesture.

“He has the presence of mind and the sense of humor to bring me a mint,” Michelle said on her tour. “And he made it a point to give me that mint right then and there, and that’s the beauty of George Bush.” Awww!

Michelle, 54, and her husband, Barack Obama, 57, first took office in 2009 after George’s two terms as president. Though Michelle and her family have a few different political viewpoints than George and his family, she has never let that affect her friendship with the former POTUS.

“I’d love if we as a country could get back to the place where we didn’t demonize people who disagreed with us. Because that’s essentially the difference between Republicans and Democrats,” Michelle previously told George’s daughter Jenna Bush Hager on Today. “We’re all Americans. We all care about our family, our kids, and we’re trying to get ahead. We have different ideas about what’s the best way to get there.”

She continued, “That doesn’t make me evil. And that doesn’t make him, you know, stupid — it’s just a disagreement and that’s how I feel about your father. You know? He’s a beautiful, funny, kind, sweet man.”

Michelle will end her Becoming book tour next year on May 12 in Nashville, TN. In her memoir, she wrote about everything from her private relationship with Barack to surviving the White House. “I am proud of what I’ve created. I’m proud because it is candid, it’s honest, it is totally and utterly me,” she previously said via social media. Congrats on your book, Michelle!
