Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber Reveal the Secret to Why Their 32-Year Marriage Works (Exclusive)
Lasting relationships are hard to come by in Hollywood, which is why ones like Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber‘s 32-year marriage are headline-making news. The NCIS star and the Mork & Mindy star, both 67, have had their fair share of ups and downs throughout the years but they have done what it takes to keep their family together.
“Pam and I have both made a living in this business, and still, there’s a part of that that’s just not natural,” Mark exclusively told Closer Weekly in the magazine’s latest issue, on newsstands now. Pam agreed, adding: “I don’t think two people can work all the time in show business and stay married.”
Mark and Pam were first introduced at a party thrown by a mutual friend back in 1986, marrying just a year later. They have two children together — sons Sean, 30, and Ty, 26 — and usually stay far away from the spotlight. In fact, the brood is rarely seen out and about, maintaining their privacy.
“They are a truly solid, no-drama couple. They are best friends who respect and are truly devoted to each other,” a friend revealed, noting that the pair complement each other. “Pam is more outgoing than Mark, who’s shier. But they are both similar in their priorities. They don’t argue a lot, they love their quiet and value hard work and honesty. They are truly decent people.”
Both have decided to make professional decisions that they feel will benefit their family the most. For Pam, this meant taking a step back from acting to stay at home and raise her kids. “It was a different life then, and I was happy to do it,” she said. As for Mark, his goal was to choose the right projects that would keep him close to home. “No job is worth missing life’s most important moments,” he said.
This is likely why Mark has spent 16 years on NCIS — one of TV’s top-rated shows. “From the beginning, this group has worked very hard to succeed or fail as one,” the man behind Leroy Jethro Gibbs said of the cast. “I don’t think there’s any one person responsible for the success fo this show, just like I believe there’s no one person responsible for the success of any team.”
In terms of retirement, Mark has “toyed with the idea” but isn’t sure about it, the friend added. As for Pam, a role hasn’t really caught her eye lately but, the source noted, “she might like to do theater again.”
When the time does come, though, Mark and Pam have a plan for what they want their life to look like. The insider revealed that they “would like to travel more and live a quieter life than they do in Los Angeles.” For that purpose, they have procured a 24-foot Airstream trailer from 1972 which has been renovated and is ready for them to ride off into the sunset together.
