How can this be?! According to Doris Day‘s foundation, the Love Me or Leave Me actress won’t have a funeral or a headstone to mark her grave. At age 97, Doris was surrounded by loved ones when she passed away at her Carmel Valley, California, home on Monday, May 13. Even though the star told Closer Weekly that she was “blessed with good health” this past April, she was unable to fight the infection that ended her life weeks later.

“Doris had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death,” The Doris Day Animal Foundation recently said in a statement. But even though Doris may be gone her family is still respecting her last wishes.

By not having a funeral or a headstone, she’ll be remembered by her peers in her own way. “She didn’t want any fuss. She just wanted to disappear,” a friend of the late Hollywood star recently told The Sun.

Doris’ death was not only hard on her family but her friends as well. “The great Doris Day left us and took a piece of the sun with her. She brightens our lives and lived out her life with dignity. May she rest peacefully,” Goldie Hawn, tweeted shortly after she heard the news. Paul McCartney‘s 47-year-old daughter, Stella McCartney, followed suit and shared the memories that she had with Doris online.

“The one, the only, the woman who inspired so much of what I do … Doris Day I love you, my calamity Jane,” she said in one of her most heartfelt posts. “An iconic woman who I was hugely honored to meet and share precious moments with. Rest in peace x.”

“She was one of a kind,” Katie Couric added. Doris was truly a legend!
