Gone but not forgotten! Doris Day died at age 97 on Monday, May 13, at her Carmel Valley, California, home, her foundation confirmed. The Hollywood icon was surrounded by loved ones when she passed away.

“Doris had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death,” The Doris Day Animal Foundation said in a statement. Even though Doris will no longer be able to charm us with her great musical skills, the actress recently told Closer Weekly that she’s grateful for the life that she’s lived.

“I have no regrets. I believe you have to try to stay positive despite life’s ups and downs,” she admitted. “It helps to have a purpose.” Doris always kept an optimistic attitude even on her worse days. “I believe that any good things came out of the bad times,” she added.

One thing Doris loved to do was stay in contact with her fans. She treated them like they were her friends instead of strangers. As she turned 97 years old on Wednesday, April 3, her friend Lea Price told Closer that she cherished every single piece of fan mail that she received.

“She wants everyone to know that she reads every card even if the volume makes it impossible to respond to everyone,” Lea said. Doris’ fans meant the world to her and she wanted them to know that. Her business manager, Bob Bashara, also told People recently that she had a great time on her birthday because she got to spend it with her loved ones.

“She always gets lots of phone calls wishing her Happy Birthday,” he said before revealing the star’s plans. “In the evening, she’ll enjoy a special birthday dinner followed by cake and ice cream.”

We miss you already, Doris!
