Chip Gaines Gives Fans a Peek Into His Marriage to Joanna, Reveals They’re ‘Opposites in a Lot of Ways’
Opposites attract! Chip Gaines, along with his wife, Joanna Gaines, have, of course, created quite the empire for themselves, all kicking off with their extremely popular show Fixer Upper. But they haven’t done it on their own, as the married couple has been a team throughout everything — even if they are very different from one another.
The pair, who launched The Magnolia Journal before their show premiered in 2013, recently revealed to the publication many things, including some facts about their marriage, as the couple has been married since 2003. And while they’ve been a duo for more than 15 years, Chip, 44, says he and his wife, 40, aren’t exactly two peas in a pod. “Jo and I are opposites in a lot of ways,” the father-of-five says. “That may lead people to draw the conclusion that we must not see eye to eye on things. And while we’re not immune to disagreements, I think it’s because of our differences that we’re able to see the best parts of each other.” He adds, “And man, when Jo and I show up on the same team, just as we are, and we let each other draw out that gold in the other, that’s when we really start to tap into the fullness of who we were created to be.”
Chip and Joanna started their HGTV show in 2013 and later wrapped it up in 2018. In that duration, the two welcomed a baby boy named Crew. And while they appeared to be argument-free on the program, Chip says that wasn’t always the case in their day-to-day lives.
“We had to get a few good disagreements under our belt in our first year of marriage before we realized how threatening it could be to our relationship if we were to make any sort of mutual life decision from opposite ends of the rope, essentially in a game of tug-of-war,” he explains. “So, early in our marriage, we conceded to truly become partners in the most thorough sense of the word. For us, that meant that when to came to decisions about our marriage, our kids, or our business, we would stand together, on the same end of the rope, and pull in the same direction.”
The TV pair is also all about their five children. Jimmy Don Holmes from JDH Iron Designs once exclusively told Closer Weekly that Chip and Jo are the cream of the crop when it comes to being a mom and dad to their kids. “They’re amazing as parents — just like his parents and her parents,” Jimmy Don dished. They’re so good with the kids! I feel like a better person because I got to know the Gaines and their parents— they’re all kind people.”
