If Cher could turn back time, she’d go back to the days she spent making music with Sonny Bono. The iconic duo was known for their music, TV show, and incredible career. In fact, the “Strong Enough” singer recently gushed about how they gained superstar fandom because of their music and their bizarre but appreciated fashion style. “Kids liked it, but adults just hated us,” Cher said of their look.

The mom-of-two even admitted that their counterculture style was an accident. “Cow Palace lost our luggage and we had to [perform] in our day clothes,” the 72-year-old admitted. “Sonny wore that bobcat, and I wore huge bell-bottoms. We didn’t think, ‘Oh, we’re breaking some taboo’ or ‘We’re avant-garde’ or any of that. We just loved the way we looked.”

Despite their cool-kid style, Sonny and Cher were decidedly straight-laced. “We broke big barriers,” confessed Cher, “but we didn’t do drugs, and we didn’t change our sound.”

Sonny and Cher’s lives were a whirlwind as soon as the two crossed paths. “I swear, it was like the Maria and Tony scene,” Cher dished to Elle referring to when they met in a coffee shop in Hollywood“Everyone just disappeared.”

At the time, Cher was 16 years old while Sonny was 27. “He was the most unusual person I’d ever seen. He had longish hair, and he had the most beautiful suit on, and beautiful long fingers, and Beatle boots, but they were Cuban heels,” Cher recollected.

Both aspiring singers, the duo would become world famous for their hit songs like “I Got You, Babe.” In fact, Cher admits that their rise to fame happened as quickly as a blink of an eye. “One day we were poor. Days later, we were famous,” she said.

It’s been almost 21 years since Cher’s ex-husband Sonny passed away in a tragic skiing trip gone wrong. Though Cher and Sonny separated over a decade before the accident, her world was still rocked when he suddenly passed.  “When he died, everything changed,” the music icon told Vegas Magazine. All of a sudden, he was gone, and it was a big loss. Our marriage was the least important thing that we did together.”
