The new Caramel M&M’s are causing quite a stir this week because of a totally awkward detail on the candy’s packaging. The fun folks over at Redbook just pointed out the strange aspect of the wrapping — and now we can’t unsee it!
Under the iconic M&M’s logo appear two of the brand’s cute mascots, the Red M&M and the Yellow M&M. But, when you look more closely at what they’re doing, your life will never be the same.

Though we’re sure the M&M brand didn’t mean any harm with the new packaging, it’s still pretty awkward. The new caramel-flavored treat hit shelves earlier this month and is now part of M&M’s permanent lineup alongside Milk Chocolate, Peanut, and Peanut Butter.
In the past, the 76-year-old candy company has released a plethora of non-traditional M&M flavors including White Chocolate Carrot Cake, Coconut, Strawberried Peanut Butter (yes, that’s real), White Chocolate Candy Corn, and Pumpkin Spice.
M&M’s first debuted in February 1941 and there was a huge public demand for the delicious chocolate candies during World War II. According to Business Insider, interest in the colorful dessert decreased by the mid-1990s and the company had to reinvent their brand.

So, M&M’s turned to advertising agency BBDO to revamp their image — and the six iconic M&M characters were born! “They’d become just candy. An aisle store candy brand versus an icon brand,” Susan Credle, BBDO’s creative director at the time, recently told BI.
Though the M&M “spokescandies” don’t have names, they’re distinguishable thanks to their different colors and unique personalities. The Red M&M is known to be sarcastic, the Yellow M&M is slightly shy, the Blue M&M is super-confident, and the Orange M&M is always stressed out (maybe because he’s always scared of being eaten).
The brand later introduced the Green M&M — the first female character! — who is known to be sassy and captivating. Ms. Brown joined the group in 2012 and is quite businesslike.
