Since we live in the 21st century, it’s very common that women may want to get married and never take their husband’s last name. However, when Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich tied the knot in July 2017, the pro hockey player thought she would end up swapping out her last name for his.

“When we first met and got engaged and stuff, we had this conversation,” he recently recalled on the podcast How Men Think with cohost Gavin DeGraw. “I was like, ‘I want you to take my last name.’ I said that. It was important to me.”

Even though Brooks, 36, expressed his concerns to Julianne, 31, at the time, the Dancing With the Stars pro dancer still decided to keep her famous last name. “To me right now, it’s not that big of an issue,” he said. “We don’t have any kids right now, but she doesn’t have my last name.”

Brooks told listeners he’s actually surprised he hasn’t made a big deal out of it yet, especially since he and Julianne may want to have children one day. “I figured it would be an issue, but I’m surprised for myself now that it’s not an issue” he explained. “But, it will be interesting to see when we have kids. When we have children, I would want them to have my last name, our last name.”

Even though it may be an “ongoing discussion” in their relationship, Brooks just wants Julianne to feel comfortable. “I’m not going to make my wife change her last name if she doesn’t feel comfortable, but I don’t think that creates a division within our relationship,” he said. “[To answer the question], I don’t find it disrespectful. I’m obviously open to it but, at the start, yeah, it was a little jarring for me.”

Perhaps a hyphenation will be in the future for these lovers!
