Oprah Winfrey made a career out of connecting with everyday people through her popular talk show, which often brought as many tears as it did laughs.
And though her program ended in 2011, the mogul has stay connected to her loyal viewers through her magazine and television network, OWN.
Winfrey decided to use her magazine as a way to share her feelings on turning 60 -- she crossed the threshold on Jan. 29! -- with those dedicated viewers and readers. In an open letter in the mag, “The Butler” actress reflects on her six decades of life.
“Sixty. I'm turning 60 this month! I'm so glad I've lived long enough to say those words and celebrate their meaning,” Winfrey begins. “I'm turning 60. I'm alive. Healthy. Strong.”
The host also reveals how a weight has been lifted off her shoulders, one that she decided didn’t need to be there anymore at her age.
“I'm turning 60, and—please don't take offense—I no longer have to be concerned about what anyone thinks of me!” Winfrey writes.
“And now, at 60, I simply want to share what I've been given. I want to continue to encourage as many people as I can to open their hearts to life…” says the star.
And although she’s interviewed every major celebrity and has traveled all over the world, Winfrey’s highest achievement stems instead from her rough childhood.
“My highest achievement: never shutting my heart down,” reveals the Oscar nominee.
“Even in my darkest moments -- through sexual abuse, a pregnancy at 14, lies and betrayals -- I remained faithful, hopeful, and open to seeing the best in people, regardless of whether they were showing me their worst.”
And even after years of success, the billionaire is still unable to grasp how her life has unfolded in such a brilliant way.
“I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that the little girl from Mississippi who grew up holding her nose in an outhouse now flies on her own plane -- my own plane! -- to Africa to help girls who grew up like her,” shares Winfrey.
“I approach this milestone, the landmark of 60, with humility, supreme thanksgiving, and joy.”
