During Grey’s Anatomy‘s 14th season, viewers watched Jo Wilson and Paul Stadler reunite during one of the most dramatic Grey’s storylines of all time. Jo’s abusive, surgeon husband showed up at Grey Sloan Memorial to assist on a medical procedure (read: torment his wife). Not surprisingly, the shocking encounter didn’t go over well and at the end of the “1-800-799-7233” episode, Paul (played by Glee alum Matthew Morrison) was the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Then, in the next episode titled “Personal Jesus,” viewers were left wondering — who hit Paul Stadler? Scoll down to see who we predicted hit Paul!

Of course, Jo (played by Camilla Luddington) had the biggest reason to want to, you know, mow down Paul with her car. As she explained in the emotional “1-800-799-7233” episode, he used to beat her when they were married. Once, he even kicked her so hard that he broke her ribs. Initially, Jo denied being involved in Paul’s accident, but fans weren’t totally sure she was innocent.

“The moment where Jo is watching Paul manipulate people and he is so charming and confident and suggesting that Jo, in her past, had not been believed? He finds subtle ways to undermine her — saying that she was a party girl and alcoholic,” showrunner Krista Vernoff told The Hollywood Reporter about Paul’s manipulative behavior. “[Jo] didn’t believe Meredith [Grey] would believe her. They had a rocky relationship in the past. But it was this incredible moment for Jo when Meredith turns around and tells her, ‘I know who you are.’ That’s when Jo breaks down because I don’t know how often — if ever — she’s heard that.”

There’s no denying that Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers) is capable of hitting Paul. This entire storyline began because he misjudged a situation between Jo and Andrew DeLuca resulting in him assaulting DeLuca. Then, he traveled to confront Paul and even imagined beating him to a pulp… before he thought better of it. Though he definitely looked like a suspect, fans hoped Alex didn’t hit Paul because he’s come so far since his near-jail experience!

Jenny

We saved the most likely for last because (let’s be real) Paul’s fiancée Jenny (played by guest-star Joy Lenz) looked super guilty. Maybe Jenny came to terms with the fact that Paul is an abusive scum-bag and decided to take matters into her own hands? “It’s a great character. It’s a really important storyline,” Joy said of playing Jenny in a recent interview. “I think it’s something that will really resonate with a lot of people, [because] it’s an issue that a lot of people don’t talk about openly. So I think it will be really important.”

Someone Else

During the episode “Personal Jesus,” Grey’s fans found out that Paul was actually hit by a drunk driver — not Jo, Alex or Jenny. Though it would have been great revenge for the trio, we’re actually relieved that it was an outside person who placed Paul in the hospital. Talk about karma, right?! At first, Paul was diagnosed with a concussion following the accident, but while trying to attack Jenny (she said she’d go to the police to report his abuse), he again slammed his already-concussed head on his hospital bed and the floor.

Following the incident, Paul ended up brain dead and Jo had to decide whether to remove him from life support because she was still legally his wife. In the end, Jo decided to donate Paul’s organs with the hope that his death could do some good after he plagued her and Jenny’s life as their abuser. Such an emotional roller coaster!
