She’s now the Duchess of Sussex, but Meghan Markle knows that her husband, Prince Harry, is definitely the more seasoned royal in their relationship. And, when it comes to official royal engagements, Meghan’s body language reportedly shows that she’s often actively working to not upstage Harry while out in public.
According to Harper’s Bazaar UK, Meghan, 37, has several “subtle techniques” to ensure Harry, 33, is always in the spotlight. While speaking with the magazine, body language expert Judi James explained that the former Suits star tends to nudge Harry to walk in front of her while they’re out and about.
“It’s quite a theatrical-based technique. She’s well aware that Harry is the star and popular among royal fans so, as a former actress, she’s very cleverly trying not to up-stage him,” James shared.
“By pushing him forward ever so slightly, she boosts the Prince’s ego and profile, making him feel more of an alpha male in the situation. It will work well with the public,” James continued. “[Meghan] is a Hollywood actress that’s come over to the UK so will be conscious not to appear overly dominant. It’s a canny move. As the older partner in the relationship with slightly more experience in A-list situations, I’d say she’s more confident than Harry by a mile.”
If Meghan’s favorite body language move leaves you a bit confused, James alleged that it’s actually most likely a way for Meghan to feel more confident in royal situations. “Meghan’s penchant for backseat driving is seen in her constant touching of Harry’s back with the palm of her hand,” she explained. “It’s quite a controlling quasi-maternal support gesture, pushing him along, but it’s also flirtatious.”
“She’s conscious of the importance of protocol. Meghan could easily upstage Harry with the international interest in her fashion. I don’t think her positioning of herself behind Harry has an iota to do with lacking in confidence,” James added. Fascinating, right?!
