Rest in peace! Eight months after Meghan McCain‘s father, John McCain, died at age 81 from brain cancer, she revealed via Instagram on Monday, April 8, that her family dog Burma has passed away.

“Every time I think my heart can’t be broken any further … our dog Burma was my father’s birthday present years ago and was absolutely and truly devoted to him,” the 34-year-old The View cohost wrote alongside a pic of John and his beloved pet. “She would never leave his side, followed him around every single step when he would walk around our ranch, slept by his side every night and we always said Chesapeake Bay retrievers were the most affectionate breed of dogs.”

“The love this dog gave him was equal to a family member. I love you Burma and hope you’re in heaven jumping into creeks, chasing sticks and fish with Dad. 💔,” Meghan added.

Shortly after Meghan shared her heartfelt tribute, she also posted a sweet video to Instagram of Burma playing fetch with her family. “Thank you for these @jhause — ♥️ forever to my dad’s dog Burma,” the blonde beauty wrote in the caption. “You brought us all so much love and joy.”

Before John died in late August, he had a great relationship with Burma. John’s ultimate death was hard on everyone in the family — especially Meghan. At his funeral on September 1, she gave an emotional eulogy and talked about how great her father was.

“He was endlessly present for us,” Meghan said in the speech. “And though we did not always understand it, he was always teaching. He didn’t expect us to be like him. His ambitions for us was to be better than him. As a girl I did not fully appreciate what I fully appreciate now: how he suffered, and how he wore it with this stoic silence that was once the mark of an American man.”
