Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union is not playing around! When the mother-of-one welcomed her first child with husband, Dwyane Wade, via surrogate, in early November 2018, she knew that sharing photos of herself with her baby online might lead to some criticism. And, because of that, the 46-year-old actress was ready to hit back at her haters, she revealed in a new interview.

“I had to hit the mommy-shamers day one,” she told People. “I’m going to do it my way. I’m sure I’m going to make all kinds of mistakes and when I ask for help, which I will, I would love to hear all y’all’s advice. Everybody has been on my journey of pain and anguish and trauma, and I owe it to myself to enjoy every second of my joy.”

Nearly a month after Gabrielle took her daughter Kaavia James home from the hospital, the new mama was slammed on social media for kissing her baby on the mouth. At the time, Gabrielle told her haters she’s “blessed” to have Kaavia in her life and would never put her in “harm’s way.”

“Kaav is healthy and I don’t even touch her without washing and sanitizing myself and everything and everyone that comes into contact with her,” she explained online. “If you think I waited this long and went [through] all this to put my baby in harm’s way … you got another thing coming.”

At the end of the day, Gabrielle knows that her opinion is the only one that matters. “I want to be able to make whatever choice I want to make and not have to answer to anybody but me,” she told People. “As long as I feel good, as long as I feel confident, screw you. Look in the mirror and fix your own life. [I want to] give people that example of somebody who refuses to let anyone dictate what the hell I do or don’t do or say or don’t say.”
