Forget about a big celebration! Doris Day is apparently planning on ringing in her 97th birthday on Wednesday, April 3 by inviting her loved ones over to her house for a small celebration.
“Doris will be spending a quiet birthday at home again this year surrounded by a few close friends,” the 96-year-old actress’ business manager Bob Bashara recently told People. “She always gets lots of phone calls wishing her Happy Birthday. And, in the evening, she’ll enjoy a special birthday dinner followed by cake and ice cream.”
Every year for Doris’ birthday, her hometown, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, hosts the Doris Day Animal Foundation’s Annual Benefit to honor the Hollywood star. “Although I’m thrilled that so many have made it an annual tradition to come to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, to celebrate my birthday and help raise money for my Doris Day Animal Foundation, I’ve never been much for big celebrations,” she previously told Closer Weekly after her 95th birthday in April 2017.
As a homebody, Doris loves to open her fan mail in her comfy abode. “The amount of fan mail she still gets is crazy,” her friend and biographer Pierre Patrick revealed to Closer in a separate interview. “When I was at her house for her birthday, there were bags, and bags of mail in the garage, and she’s great at answering it all.”
The star remains in great health today and is apparently looking forward to having many more years with her loved ones. “She’s very healthy,” Pierre said about his friend. “Doris sleeps well and eats well, and her life is really focused now on taking care of her [animal groups].”
In her 90s, Doris has everything that she wants. “I’ve been blessed with good health, wonderful pals, lovely fans and so many precious four-leggers,” she once gushed. “What more can I ask for?”
